Downloading files used to be a major hassle, especially back in the days when dial up Internet was the only way to go. Back in those days, just getting a phone call on your Internet line could derail an entire megabyte of downloading- which might end up taking about an hour to accomplish. And even if you only had a few bytes left to go with your download, you would just end up being out of luck entirely. Unfortunately, back in those days you did not have any kind of options available, when it came to resuming a download. Whoever invented the download manager deserves a lot of respect for the service that they did for the world, whether they have received any material gain from it or not.
After all, being able to resume a download later on is a pretty nifty way to keep whatever you have gained from it so far. While almost nobody still uses dial up in this day and age, just about everyone does the occasional download. And while getting a megabyte or two is no longer the ordeal that it used to be, nowadays you could easily just exchange “gigabyte” for “megabyte” and hit the nail just as squarely on the head as you ever would have.
When you think about the download manager as a tool of more than just recovery, you can actually plan out when you are going to download something. For example, if you do not intend to use your computer at two o’clock in the morning, you can always set it up to download something that ought to be finished by about ten in the morning. How great is it to be able to go to bed, knowing that your computer will automatically download something you want while you sleep, without any additional actions on your part. It is a little bit like Christmas morning, in the sense of a lot of anticipation.
